History

A legacy spanning more than half a century

Batsanis is a family business that was founded in 1956, from humble beginnings in a small shoe factory in Johnston St Collingwood. Building a reputation for quality shoes with traditional construction techniques, the Batsanis name quickly became synonymous with well-crafted footwear. Arthur Batsanis acquired a high level of skill to manufacture and repair shoes whilst serving for the army in Europe. After receiving an overwhelming amount of positive feedback for his repairing skills, Arthur also started to produce children’s shoes as well as men’s boots to order.  Arthur’s production attracted a lot of support and appreciation which encouraged him to recognise the niche producing well handcrafted quality shoes for men.

Arthur’s eldest son Jim Batsanis shared the same passion as his father and in 1980 Jim officially joined Arthur’s business. Jim’s hard work in finding and securing business from big department stores and men’s fashion boutiques saw orders became abundant and production was officially moved to a newly built factory in Thomastown in 1989. The factory was manufacturing and branding shoes for large department stores throughout Australia.

In 1984, Jim’s wife, Olga Batsanis joined Batsanis as a lead footwear designer.  Her unique and fashion forward designs appealed to many and further increased sales. Olga was the first woman in Australia to graduate from a pattern cutting course which was a male dominated industry at the time. Her hard work and persistence paid off and she received many accolades for her design work with men’s shoes.
In 1994 the company opened its first retail store in Chapel St South Yarra. Expansion into retail across Melbourne and Sydney continued steadily as fashion conscious men caught onto the stylish shoes Batsanis created.

Jims love for the game of Golf lead him to start producing Golf shoes in 1995. After recognising that this market segment was missing a stylish and comfortable Golf shoe Jim sought to fill this void. The response was like nothing else the company had ever seen and demand quickly grew with waiting lists for shoes of up to 3 months. Advertising on local sports AM radio further added to the demand and soon Batsanis was shipping Golf shoes into South East Asia. Celebrity’s and people alike loved the style and comfort that Batsanis Golf shoes provided which further added to the demand for the product. In 2000 the Batsanis Golf was gaining a lot of attention by some of Golfs biggest apparel names and the division was sold and manufacturing of this product ceased at our Thomastown factory.

Trends in the Australian fashion market saw us in 2003 end manufacturing in Australia and open two manufacturing arms, one in Italy and one China. This was an important strategic move as we would not lose the manufacturing knowledge we had gained over the preceding 40 years of manufacturing experience in Australia. We quickly moved to secure great quality leathers and other shoe related materials from Italian tanneries, who are the leaders in this industry. We also set up close relationships with Italian exporters to help in shipping these raw materials to our Italian and Chinese subsidiaries. This would enable to provide tight quality control procedures by starting off with great quality raw materials and provide our customers with the quality, style and comfort Batsanis was known for.

In 2010 saw the introduction of our online store which at the time was only limited to shipping within Australia. The Batsanis online store has grown from strength to strength and today is the core of our business which offers great style advice through our blogs as well as offering shipping internationally.
2016 brings Batsanis into their 60th trading year as a third generation family business.  Batsanis has managed to sustain its business for 6 decades by following and adapting to global and economic trends.  To enable people to wear Batsanis shoes, both interstate and internationally at a competitive price, Batsanis has restructured the business and thus the decision was made to concentrate and position ourselves as an online only business. We are proud of our rich heritage and our position as a leader of men’s footwear in Australia.

Batsanis will continue to provide its quality footwear and free standard post within Australia.  Batsanis will also continue to provide renowned premium customer service.

HOW TO MEASURE

To measure your feet stand on a level floor with the back of your heels against a straight edge or wall.

FOOT LENGTH

Measure your foot length by placing a ruler flat on the floor straight alongside the inside of your foot from your heel to your toes. Place an object with a flat edge straight across your toes with the edge touching the tip of your longest toe. Take the measurement (in centimeters) from the ruler where the flat edge crosses. This is your foot length measurement.

SELECTING A SHOE SIZE

If your foot measurement is halfway between sizes, select the larger size. You may find one foot is longer than the other, this is quite normal, please use the larger size when making your shoe size selection.
